Whey, casein, plant-based: there are so many different types of protein powders to choose from. All formulas provide essential amino acids to help build muscle and add to your daily protein intake, while some can either help you gain or lose weight. Because it’s crucial to fuel your body with protein following a workout, it’s important to make sure you’re consuming the right protein for your body.
We understand selecting a protein powder that fits your lifestyle and fitness goals can be a little overwhelming, so we’re here to help you decide which protein powder is right for you!
Whey Protein
Containing a milk-based protein, whey protein powder is one of the most popular choices for most people who consume protein following a workout. Whey protein is also one of the most inexpensive protein powders available and is relatively easy to find. You’ve probably heard of both whey concentrate and whey isolate – what’s the difference?
Whey concentrate has a higher lactose level which can cause irritation and bloating to those who are lactose intolerant or have a dairy allergy whereas whey isolate has lower levels of lactose, a better choice for those who are lactose intolerant. Whey isolate also contains zero fat and lower carbohydrates than whey concentrate. Both forms of whey protein will provide similar results, with the difference being isolate is a better choice for those who are lactose intolerant or who are looking to consume lower calories (less lactose equals less fat, resulting in less calories). Both formulas blend well and come in a variety of tasty flavors, making them a popular addition to post-workout smoothies.
Casein Protein
Also known as milk protein, casein contains more calcium than whey. Similar to whey protein- both are dairy-based- casein protein is absorbed into the body slower than whey protein. Tasting similar to whey, casein protein helps the body to gradually absorb amino acids, reducing the overall rate of digesting the protein. Because of this, consuming casein protein powder isn’t highly recommended following a workout. If you’re looking for a protein powder that blends into a smoothie, casein may not be the right protein for you. Casein, however, makes a great addition to foods like ice cream and protein pudding.
Egg Protein
For those who are looking for a high level of proteins, egg protein powder is an excellent choice. Easily digested into the body, egg protein is a great option for those who have milk allergies but are looking for animal-based protein. Derived from harvested eggs, egg protein contains A, B and D vitamins, aiding in nutrition.
Plant-Based Protein
A popular choice for vegetarians and vegans, plant-based protein powders are made of grains, seeds, peas, or beans. Because plant-based protein powders are made from plants and other natural resources, they’re relatively easy to digest. There are a variety of plant-based protein powders like soy, rice, hemp, or peas – each one has their own benefit and is a great alternative for those who don’t consume animal proteins or have dairy allergies.
Finding the right protein powder to meet your needs really depends on personal preference. If you’re new to the world of protein powders and aren’t sure where to start, start with whey protein (unless you have a dairy allergy or are vegan). Because whey protein powder is fairly inexpensive, easy to find and provides essential amino acids, it’s a great starting point. Once you know how well your body tolerates whey protein, stick with it for a few weeks to see if you’re noticing more muscle mass or easier post-workout recoveries. If you’re not thrilled with your results or you’re experiencing bloating or an upset stomach after consuming whey protein powder then try the others listed above. It may take some time to choose the right protein powder for you, but once you do, you’ll love the extra tone in muscle as a result!
