At our Kansas City fitness center, we find there are a number of myths about working out. Some people feel that the more they work out, the more calories they’ll burn and the better off they’ll be. They simply take the number of calories they should burn per hour and multiply it by 7 to imagine how effective their weight loss will be. We also have people who feel that they should just skip their workouts altogether if they can’t make it for a full hour. Why bother, if they’re just going through the motions and not investing enough time? Both approaches are misguided, in our professional opinion. Here’s why…

Sometimes Less Is Best…

A number of exercisers run into trouble with their fitness routines because they hit the weights for an hour a day, seven days a week. In the industry, this is what we like to call “overtraining.” When one over-trains, the muscle begins to break down and increased amounts of free radicals flood the body. The muscle rips and tears, but cannot adequately rebuild itself if there is not a planned recovery in between. A “day of rest” doesn’t mean you have to be entirely sedentary. You can walk, take a yoga class, or do some other type of low-impact exercise.

Quality Is More Important To Fitness Than Quantity…

Likewise, you can make great strides in your fitness level — even if you only have 30 minutes to spare. Research shows that 30 minutes of High Intensity Interval Training is more effective in burning fat and improving fitness levels than 60 minutes of the same exercise at an even pace. Tennis players, runners, soccer players and tri-athletes all use HIIT to fine-tune their bodies and their abilities. Simply taking a walk every day is enough exercise to provide the body with cardiovascular benefits.
